SKIPPERS CANYON

Queenstown

The Historic Skippers Canyon, located 25 mins from Queenstown, was a buzz of goldmining activity from the 1860's up until the early 1900's.

In the height of this activity the Canyon was inhabited by 10,000 goldminers and was thankfully, for the miners, serviced by 30 pubs - one every mile.

The only access in and out of Skippers was the old "Pack Track" until 1902 when the hair-raising single lane road was completed. This was an impressive feat as large sections of rock had to be blown through and took 20yrs to finish.

In recent years, areas of Skippers Canyon has been used for movie locations - including scenes from Lord of the Rings.

Now in the the Canyon there are still some remains of the history, and it's home to many a adventure activity from Helicopter Flights, Whitewater Rafting down the Shotover River, and mountain biking with Gravity Action down the old "Packtrack".
